I started my morning with some Aomori apple juice and then went to the train station where I discovered that stormy weather forced the cancellation of the train I'd planned to take...
What was there left to do but take photos of apples around Hirosaki Station while I waited for another train?

"Welcome to the Apple Kingdom of Hirosaki!" |

"Apple City, Hirosaki" |

Coin lockers decorated with the three things this city is famous for: apples, cherry blossoms, and Hirosaki Castle |

They even put apples in the name of their department store... |
I ended up having to change routes; rather than go down the coastline, I was forced to take the train running inland. It wasn't what I'd planned on, but I did enjoy the snow along the way.

Apple trees... |
Because of the alternative route I ended up arriving in Akita well before noon, which was much earlier than I'd planned, leaving me with several hours to walk around. I came to this city for the first time this past May, and it was interesting to see the seasonal changes in Senshu Park. (
Look here to see my pictures of the same park in the spring.)

Azalea bushes all ready for the long winter. While they may look like Christmas trees to Western eyes, these ropes are actually meant to protect trees and bushes from the weight of heavy snowfall and are used in parks and gardens all around the country. |
After a walk around the city and a little bit of lunch I was back on the train again, this time for a three-hour ride to Shin
jō. I'll just be here overnight and part of the day tomorrow, before continuing on to the last two destinations of my trip...

Welcome to Shinjō Station |
